ChatGPT rank tracking

There is no rank inside an AI answer

If you arrived looking for a ChatGPT rank tracker or an AI rank tracker, here is the honest version of what one can measure. There is no list of ten to hold position in — but there is something better defined, and you can track it properly.

What to measure instead

Three things that are actually well defined

Each one can be traced back to an answer you can read, which a position number cannot.
01

Appearance rate

How many of the runs named you, out of how many were collected. The sample size travels with the number, so you can tell 2 of 3 from 20 of 30.

02

Share against competitors

Of the answers that named anyone in your category, what share named you. This is the closest honest analogue to a ranking, because it is relative.

03

Movement over time

The same prompts, the same engines, the same sampling, re-run on a schedule. Changes mean something because the method did not change underneath them.

A caution

Be wary of a tool that gives you a position

Especially one that cannot show you the answer it came from.
A number that looks like a Google ranking is easy to put in a report and easy to act on. That is exactly the problem: it implies a precision the underlying surface does not have, and when it moves you have no way to tell whether anything changed in the world or the model simply sampled differently this week. We would rather hand you a rate with its sample size attached and the raw answers underneath it.

Common questions

Can you track your ranking in ChatGPT?
Not in the sense SEO means by ranking. There is no ordered list of ten results to hold a position in — there is one answer naming a few companies. What you can track is how often you are named across repeated runs, whether you are recommended or just mentioned, and where you sit relative to competitors in the same answers.
So why does every AI rank tracker sell a position?
Because that is the phrase people search for, having come from SEO. Most of them are measuring mention frequency and presenting it as a rank. That is fine as long as the tool says so. The risk is a position number that looks precise, cannot be traced to an answer, and moves for reasons nobody can explain.
Does order within the answer matter?
Probably, and we record it, but we are careful about how much weight to put on it. Being named first in a list of three is likely better than third. Treating that ordering as a stable rank you can optimise against is a bigger claim than the evidence supports.
How is this different from tracking Google rankings?
Google returns the same ten results to everyone at a given moment, so a position is a fact. ChatGPT samples its answer, so the same prompt gives different results run to run. Any single reading is noise. That is why everything here is a rate over repeated samples rather than a position.
